Bearing Witness - 9/11

The documented movements of photographers and film crews who were present that morning, told through what can be confirmed, what can be reasonably reconstructed, and what remains estimated.

This is a working demonstration, not a finished archive. Coordinates for the towers and the firehouse are real; other waypoints are placed as approximate, illustrative pins along a documented or reconstructed route - not survey-accurate positions. No photograph or video is hosted or reproduced here: every media card links out to the institution or estate that holds the rights, and video only embeds when a specific, verified official video ID has been confirmed. Before publishing exact positions or times, verify them against primary sources, ideally with input from historians, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, and the individuals' families or estates.

A note on omissions: this record does not include every widely known photograph of the day. Richard Drew's photograph of a man falling from the North Tower is, by most accounts, the single most historically significant image from September 11 - but the man in it has never been positively identified, and families who believe they recognize him have asked that he not be named in connection with it. Out of respect for that, this project has chosen not to feature, link to, embed, or otherwise discuss that photograph beyond this note.

The Fixed Vantage Points mode is deliberately narrow: only positions with an independently documented location and description of what was captured are included. It is not a catalog of every photograph from the day - the September 11 Photo Project alone holds work from more than 700 contributors, most without individually documented vantage points, which is why they aren't listed here.

A note on the "Circa 2001" basemap: it's built from New York City's own 2001 aerial survey, and most of the city in it does predate the attacks. The World Trade Center site itself is the one exception - that specific imagery was replaced with a later flight documenting the cleared site during the recovery, so it shows the aftermath, not the standing towers.
